I'M DETERMINED TO GROW MY HAIR EVEN LONGER FOR CHRISTMAS

Hi people, what's been on?

Yes o! That title is for reals!!!

Christmas season is usually when I straighten my hair and I'm challenging myself to grow out my recent trim and retain the 0.6 inches of hair I grow per month. That's what I got after completely dyeing a grey strand of hair and letting it grow for a month before I plucked it out. It's not 100% accurate since I measured just one strand of hair from one area of my head....but it's good enough for me.

The harmattan season is officially in. It's a lot like winter...cool, dry and brittle especially at night. In the day time it's scorching hot and dry like the Sahara.

This is the season where a lot of breakage and brittleness can happen and with this in mind, I'm switching my regimen to a more moisturising one. The changes I'll be making won't be much since my hair is normally on the dry side (especially my colored ends) but I'm taking things seriously.

I plan to straighten my hair on the 23rd of December by God's grace so between now and then, I'll be sticking strictly to my new regimen.

My regimen is as follows:

  • Daily:

Oil with NappyGirl Growth Enhancing Oil and moisturise with Aphogee Curlific Leave In Conditioner.

  • Weekly:

Cowash with Mazuri Naturals Shea Butter Cleansing Cowash, Oil and Moisturise.

  • Every two weeks:

Deep condition using my portable deep conditioning cap with either Brazen Curls Avocado and Banana Moisture Masque or SheaMoisture African Black Soap Dandruff Control Masque.
I think my favorite SheaMoisture African Black Soap Purification Masque has been discontinued and has been replaced with the Dandruff Control Masque. I wonder why? The Purification Masque was perfect. I'm going to miss the slip. Slippery conditioners are everything. Thank God for Brazen Curls. If the Dandruff Control doesn't work, all is not lost.

  • Once a month:

I'm going to do an intensive protein treatment using a keratin straightening kit. While I still henna my hair to maintain the color of my dyed ends, using Beautiful Textures Texture Manageability System has proven effective where protein treatment is concerned. I prefer it to Aphogee 2 step protein treatment because,
- BT TMS smells better.
- It is easy to apply and it is a leave in.
- I do not need heat for it to work.
- It contains hydrolysed keratin (which my hair is made out of) and does the job without making my hair feel crispy.
- It is not messy like egg, coconut milk, henna etc.
I'll be using the SheaMoisture Tahitian Monoi Straightening Kit this time instead of the one by Beautiful Textures.

P.S. If you've gotten the NappyGirl Hair Kits, skip the shampoo and use the rest of the products for this regimen. You can get in touch with me if you need further assistance.

  • Protective Styles

My hair will be in a protective style. It will be in either a bun, twists or under a wig. I don't usually do protective styles with extensions during harmattan period because on any good day, they dry out my fine hair. However, if your hair can withstand it and you'd like to join me, you can use extensions. You should be able to have access to your hair and scalp.

I don't go to the gym. I exercise leisurely (walking, climbing the stairs, dancing etc) so if you're a gyming naturalista, you may need to cowash more often. I'll advise to invest in a cowash cleanser like As I Am Coconut cowash and the like instead of cowashing with regular conditioner. The cowash cleansers clean better without leaving any buildup.
