IN MY NATURAL HAIR CLOSET

By Hadassah Agbaps - May 11, 2013

Hi people! What's been on?
I'm so glad my hair is free but I still ended up putting it in a bun (see pic on instagram @nappilynigeriangirl).

I decided to take an inventory of the things I use on my hair.
I want to whittle it down to the basics..... which seems to be almost impossible because I love those shiny colourful new bottles of products for hair and skin.
Blame the mags I read for this.
I just wish I don't have to go through the anxiety of praying the products I order online make it safely to me. It's really stressful..and what about the length of time it takes for stuff to arrive?!
It hasn't been easy though considering how difficult it is to find natural hair friendly products in Nigeria.
I've finally sorted out my stash.
Here are my current products.

From L-R
Organics Root Stimulator Replenishing Conditioner (a staple),
Herbal Essence Hello Hydration Conditioner (Doesn't do much for my hair. Nice scent sha), Aussie Moist Shampoo (Staple)
Aphogee Balancing Moisturiser ( Use it as a conditioner sometimes)
Aphogee Two Step Treatment ( Protein Treatment on the go)
Suave Kids 2in1 Smoothers in Cowabunga ( Great for everyone's hair but mine. Dried out my hair)

L-R
Motions Light Hold Spritz (contains drying alcohol. Bought it to combat frizziness in my flat ironed hair and twistout without success. Learnt the best way to use was to spray on palms , then apply on hair. The alcohol evaporates and it kinda tames frizz but I still don't use it.If you want it please let me know).
Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera Gel ( My all in all! Moisturiser, gel, primer, face mask base, love it!)
Biosilk Silk Therapy (Silicone based...but gives awesome shine without stickiness to my moisturized hair. It's really lightweight. I use it on damp hair . No need to reapply. Love it! I use it to prevent reversion of my straightened hair. The best silicone based serum I've used).
My DIY oil spray (contains olive oil, coconut oil, castor oil, Vitamin E oil ,Wheat Germ oil, Rosemary Essentail Oil ,Eucalyptus Essential Oil and Vanilla Oil. Love it!).
EcoStyler Gel ( a replacement for ORS Loc and Twist gel for my shingling, wash and go's, flyaways, two strand twists, flat twists and the "out" styles).
NappyGirl Ubermoist Pudding ( perfect for sealing, styling and prepooing. Also use it on dry skin).
Cantu Shea Butter Repair Leave in Conditioner ( used under NappyGirl. Replacement for Organics Texture My Way Curl Keeper Moisturising Lotion. Can't seem to find it in stores anymore. When I do, I'll have to buy all the bottles! Keeps my curls moisturized for ever!)
Organics Root Stimulator Olive Oil Incredibly Rich Moisturiser ( very lengthy name but use it for just one thing...thermal protectant!)
911 Leave in Conditioner ( Bought this to try out for new naturalistas needing a leave in that can easily be obtained in stores. Does a good job on the relaxed bit of transitioning hair. Does nothing much for the kinky bits. It's very convenient as a hair mist if you switch the cap for a mist cap like I did. Great for those who don't want the hassle of making their own hair spritz).

    1. LOL! .....and a product junkie was born! Babe, you are worse than me! LOL! Well,it's an investment as I always manage to convince myself. The money I save on weaves and salon visits should be invested in good hair products with change left over! Don't forget to send pics o!

  5. Wow,Thank you,Fola!:) Looking forward to reading your email and comments!
Quick answer to quick question: I got my body art henna from a trader called Abdul in Wuse Market, Abuja.I was directed to him by some Hausa women when I told them I was interested in "lalle" aka henna.
I'm not sure where to get it in Lagos so I'll direct you to naturalnigerian.com since she resides in Lagos. I also feel a makeup artist that has worked with Muslim brides will be able to help you. Another alternative is asking women that do henna designs in the market where you can obtain it.
Please when you finally find it, do share!

    1. Hi dear, you can get the Vitamin E in any pharmacy near you. The FOTE Aloe Vera gel was hard to find in the stores I visited in Lag. I got mine in Awka. You can substitute with aloe Vera gel from the plant (preferable).
