PRODUCT REVIEW: CANTU SHEA BUTTER FOR NATURAL HAIR DEEP TREATMENT MASQUE

By Hadassah Agbaps - July 05, 2014

Hi people, what's been on?

You know how I've been raving about manshanu and using natural products to care for my hair? Well, sometimes it gets boring because there isn't any fancy colorful jars or bottles to brighten things up.....okay truth is I love trying out products. That's a personal hobby of mine. Some people collect stamps or barbie dolls....I collect products especially natural hair products.
When I troll the web for natural hair inspirations, I read about different magical products and as soon as I have the opportunity, I get them to try out and see what the hype is all about.

I needed a deep conditioner for those days I am too lazy to whip up my own. I came across this among other products in Casabella while I was in Lagos. Lagos peeps, una dey enjoy o!
Since I already used and loved a Cantu product i.e. Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream, I decided to give this a try along with the Coconut Curling Cream.

I've used it for close to two months so I think a review is long overdue.

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Thoroughly coat hair section by section, paying special attention to dry or damaged ends. Leave on the hair for 30 minutes and rinse. For extremely, dry damaged hair, Cantu Deep Treatment Mask can also be used as a leave in conditioner.

MY REVIEW
I used this after shampooing my hair. I didn't bother to condition because I feel that using a conditioner before a deep conditioner somehow reduces the effectiveness of a deep conditioner. I also apply it on towel blotted hair not on sopping wet hair. Same reasons.
I applied this to two sections of my hair and covered with a showercap for 30mins. Then I rinsed off with cold water.

Results?
For starters I don't think I'm a fan of the coconut-ty vegetable oil smell and the thing is it somehow lingers. This has prevented me from using it as a leave in. I prefer the pinacolada scent of the Cantu Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream.
The consistency is thick...as in you have to scoop it out thick and a little goes a long way.
If you are heavy handed, you'll be stuck with a white goop that is harder to rinse out because of all the oils.

After rinsing out, my hair felt really soft....it does this anyway as long as it is wet so I had to wait until my hair dried before knowing how good it was.

Hmmm...it took a while for my hair to dry which was a good sign. So I skipped the Leave in conditioning step and sealed with NappyGirl UberMoisture Pudding alone.

On consistent use ( Twice a month....I have to shampoo once every two weeks because of the dust from construction going on), I noticed my hair felt really happy. Boingy too.

I used it on my sister's low porosity low cut (she recently bigchopped) and it really helped out with the dry (feels like barb wire) part of her hair. No more dryness. Problem solved. She loved it so much that she made me give her mine and order another for her.

Will I repurchase?
Errr...no. It works beautifully I admit but the smell just isn't for me. I'm more of a vanilla, cream, chocolate, banana, strawberry kind of naturalista. If I have no other option, I'll be forced to repurchase....but alas I do.
I recommend it if you have low porosity dry kinky hair...the type that will cut you because it is thirsty. It works lovely as a leave in. Just apply it to slightly damp hair.

So that's my take on this product.

  1. I tried the Leave-in for natural hair and I HATED it. I saw this product at the NITC8 meet-up and I turned up my nose and walked past it. I will not try this Natural line ever again :-0

  2. I agree with you. Not all products in the Cantu line is perfect (the flat iron spray and oil sheen are rubbish IMO) neither is any product that says 'For natural hair'. I'm usually wary of relaxed hair lines that decided to go natural. Their old products are usually better.
However I find that with products containing a lot of oils and butters, one has to be really lighthanded with them or they tend to float on your strands.

  4. I didn't like the moisturiser (or something) for natural hair. But I do love the argan oil. The shea butter has a nice smell but it's too strong and lingers on and on and on and drives me crazy. And my hair doesn't like mineral oil in moisturisers or conditioners, only in sealants. I'll try this cos it's cheap and has some ingredients my fussy hair likes. My hair likes expensive conditioners, it's ridiculous. I've been on the lookout for something cheap and effective for my low porosity hair.
